FAQ

Answers to common questions about metal spinning, CNC spinning, flow forming, materials, tolerances, tooling, surface finishing and OEM manufacturing.

Metal Spinning FAQs

Metal spinning provides several key benefits. The finished parts are free of wrinkles and warping. Metal spinning generates minimal scrap, reducing material waste. It is often more affordable than other metal forming methods, particularly for small production runs. Additionally, the spinning process can work-harden the metal, resulting in stronger finished components.

What is metal spinning?

Metal spinning is a cold-worked metal forming process. On a rotating lathe, a flat metal disc is shaped over a mandrel. With tools or rollers, pressure deforms the metal to produce round, symmetrical components. Since no material is cut or removed, the finished parts feature smooth surfaces and consistent uniformity.

Which industries commonly use metal spinning?

Metal spinning is used in aerospace, defense, architecture, and appliance manufacturing. It’s ideal for producing precision components like engine parts, cookware, lighting fixtures, and decorative metalwork for industrial and commercial applications.

How does CNC metal spinning differ from manual spinning?

CNC metal spinning uses computer-controlled machines for precise, repeatable production. Unlike manual spinning, which depends on operator skill, CNC systems automate shaping, ensuring consistent quality, higher production rates, and tighter tolerances for complex designs.

What is the difference between hot spinning and cold spinning?

Hot spinning heats the metal to make it more pliable, enabling smaller diameters and seamless shoulders. Cold spinning is performed at room temperature and is preferred for applications requiring dimensional accuracy and work-hardened strength.

What are the advantages of metal spinning?

Metal spinning is cost-effective, fast, and produces wrinkle-free, high-quality parts. It minimizes material waste and work-hardens the metal for added strength, making it ideal for both small and medium production runs in manufacturing facilities.

What are the applications of precision metal spinning?

Precision metal spinning enables the creation of products such as engine components, gas cylinders, nozzles, tank heads, rocket nose cones, brass instrument bells, decorative items, specialty lighting, public waste bins, funnels, freezer parts, mixing bowls, cookware, filter housings, pressure vessels, and cartridges.

What shapes can metal spinning produce?

The most common shapes are hollow dished, conical, hemispherical, and elliptical shapes. Edge configuration that includes beads and hems are also accomplished with metal spinning. Due to the nature of the process, most spinnings are round. In some instances spinning can be combined with other forming processes to produce slightly irregular shapes.

  • Hastelloy Alloys
  • Inconel
  • Mu-metal
  • Silver
  • Titanium
What types of parts can be made using metal spinning?

We leverage our metal forming expertise to manufacture a wide range of metal-spun components, including dished ends, pressure vessel parts, spun cones, tank heads, and custom profiles.

Precision Metal Spinning:

  • Tolerance: ±0.1 mm
  • Maximum diameter: Ø3000 mm

Cross-Industry Expertise:

  • We serve sectors including Aerospace, Architecture, Automotive, Lighting, Energy, Agriculture and more.
Is there a tooling cost?

Yes, tooling costs are normally required. We evaluate options to deliver the most cost-effective solution for your project requirements.

Do you have standard lead times?

Our standard lead time is 3–4 weeks where feasible. Lead times may be extended for large-volume metal spinning orders.

What finishing or secondary operations do you provide?

We offer a full range of finishing and secondary operations including edge trimming, beading and hemming, CNC machining, vessel welding, internal and external polishing, surface treatments (such as pickling and passivation for stainless steel), powder coating, and non-destructive testing (NDT).

Can polishing, anodising and other finishing be done in-house?

Yes. Our in-house finishing shop provides mechanical polishing (manual or automated), electropolishing, pickling, passivation, and anodising. Edge trimming, beading, CNC machining and welding can all be completed within the same order, so components leave our facility ready for assembly or further welding.

What industries use metal spinning services?

We serve a variety of industries including Aerospace, Architecture, Automotive, Lighting, Energy, Agriculture and more.

What are dished ends, and where are they used?

Dished ends are the end caps welded to the main body of a pressure vessel, providing pressure containment, strength, and stability. The curved shape distributes pressure evenly, reducing stress concentrations and preventing deformation. Dished ends are effective in increasing the internal volume of a pressure vessel, allowing more space for liquids, gases, or any other materials. They can be created in different ways depending on the type of end that is needed for the project and also will need the properties that make it suitable for its application once completed. Types such as flat flanged ends, ellipsoidal, hemispherical, and torispherical dished ends offer varying levels of strength and fabrication ease, making them essential for durable and efficient pressure systems.

What is a pressure vessel?

A pressure vessel is a secure container that is designed to hold a range of vapours, liquids, and gases. Pressure vessels can come in different shapes and sizes depending on their specific applications. A typical model of a pressure vessel is a long cylinder combined with two heads. Pressure vessel parts may be used for heat exchangers, reactors, flash drums, distillation towers, and separators and are expertly spun for the safety, chemical, petrochemical and food production sectors.

Do you make dish ends for pressure vessels and stainless steel tank heads?

Yes. Dish ends for pressure vessels and stainless steel dished tank heads are a regular product. We supply the formed head; vessel design, PED modules and any ASME stamp stay with the vessel fabricator unless agreed separately. Internal or external polish, pickling and passivation can be done in the same works.

I have been comparing other dished end manufacturers. What should I send for a quote?

Inside or outside diameter, thickness, material and grade, profile, straight-flange length, quantity, and any code or finish. No drawing is fine, we will issue one with the quotation, usually within 24 hours, for you to sign off before metal is cut.

How do you calculate dish end volume and dimensions?

It depends on the profile. A 2:1 ellipsoidal head is typically a quarter of the inside diameter deep; a hemisphere is half a sphere. Knuckle, crown and straight flange change both height and volume, so a generic dish end volume calculator is only a first pass. Give us the radii and we will put the finished dimensions on a drawing with the quote, at no extra cost.

Can I quote my part with all services at once?

You can get a quote for spinning and deep drawing stamping.

Do you sell dish end making machines or other equipment?

No. We manufacture dish ends and other bespoke metal-spun parts, not machinery. We complete all orders using our in-house metal spinning and press tooling. You purchase finished tank heads and spun components from us, not capital equipment.

Do you spin parts for agricultural and automotive applications?

Yes. Our agricultural precision metal spinning supplies hopper cones, tank dish ends, covers and protective guards. For automotive applications, we manufacture formed hub components, exhaust guide tubes, shock-absorber bodies and other rotationally symmetric vehicle parts in steel, stainless steel and aluminum.
